A fitting gift

In July I was invited to create a “going away” gift for the Bishop of Algoma, the Right Reverend Doctor Stephen Andrews, from All Saints’ Anglican Church, Huntsville.  He is leaving the Diocese of Algoma to become Principal of Wycliffe College, University of Toronto, where he will guide the education of future clergy.

I was honoured of course, and the concept came quickly to me; Northern Lights towering over a silhouette landform, reflecting in the dark water of the foreground.  Soaring earthward in the light, a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit.  Bishop Stephen has been in Sault Ste. Marie, and I wanted to combine a souvenir of the northern landscape, with the divine in the design.

Unfortunately, the timeline did not allow for professional photography, so I just have a few snapshots taken during the presentation in the parish hall, which I would not normally post, but I wanted to share this news somehow!  Believe me, it looks better in person.

The Bishop and his wife Fauna were genuinely impressed by the gift.  It was my great honour to have had the opportunity to create it for him.  We will miss his warmth, kindness, humour and insight, but of course wish him well as he embarks on his next adventure of service.
