Out of This World!

Kelly Holinshead has curated an exhibition of work by local artists for the Canada Summit Centre, Huntsville, opening Thursday November 19, 2015.  The theme that artists were encouraged to interpret very broadly is "Out of This World".
I had been incubating an idea for over a year, and decided this was my motivation to get it out of my head and into glass.

Jacob's Ladder

Imagine Jacob’s dream ladder resting on the Precambrian rock of Muskoka, linking heaven and earth.  Literally, "out of this world"...
I'm excited to see the other pieces in this exhibition, and I hope you have a chance to see it too.  The show can be viewed any time the Canada Summit Centre is open, until mid-February.  The opening reception is November 19 from 5-7pm.

Reflections of Midday

Reflections of Midday - on it's side!

“Reflections of Midday” is a free-hanging panel I made recently for an exhibition at the Canada Summit Centre, Huntsville.  The show features work by Artists of the Limberlost, and runs to May 12, 2014.

Here it is, lying on my work table, in the correct orientation.

Winter is a time of re-evaluation and experimentation for me.  This year I wanted to design a non-objective piece using exclusively frit –glass for fusing that has been crushed and graded according to 5 different sized “grits”, from powder to coarse.  I had some old pine window frames salvaged from a nearby cottage, and began removing the clear glass, rock-hard putty and loose paint from one of the frames, without an idea of where I’d go with it.  While I continued restoring the wooden frame, I got to thinking about what that window had looked out on over the years.  I imagined a sunbaked cottage garden full of bright flowers – the sky in the distance.  Rather than make six panels to fit into the openings, I made 30 strips, like a venetian blind with small spaces between – giving the sense of not one “scene”, but glimpses of many.  I’m pleased with the result, and will photograph it properly when the exhibition is over.  It does look better in real life!  This panel is for sale.  Please contact me if interested.

2 Sales at Canada Summit Centre!

Two of my glass plates have now sold at the Canada Summit Centre!  Spring Birches, shown here, sold this week.  The exhibition continues to April 15 2012.

Opening Reception Guests

Here are some of the guests who attended the Artists of the Limberlost opening reception at the Canada Summit Centre.  This location gets great exposure; today 3 people told me they loved my work; they'd never seen it before, but they discovered it when going swimming at the Summit Centre!

Canada Summit Centre Reception

Here are some pictures from the opening reception of the Artists of the Limberlost exhibit at the Canada Summit Centre in Huntsville.  We had about 40 guests including Mayor Claude Doughty, CAO Kelly Pender, and the Manager of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Teri Souter, from the Town of Huntsville.  Lake of Bays Councillors Ginny Burgess (who is also one of our sponsors) and Shane Baker both attended with their spouses.  We were pleased to see Kelly Haywood and Allison O'Mara from the Chamber of Commerce, as well as Helena Renwick from the Huntsville BIA.  Thank you to all the officials, clients, friends and family who helped celebrate the opening of our second group exhibition!

Canada Summit Centre exhibition

Artists of the Limberlost exhibit at Huntsville’s Canada Summit Centre, January 20 to April 15 2012

The Artists of the Limberlost is one of the arts groups I belong to.  It is a collective of 7 artists that have studios on or around Limberlost Rd. (Muskoka Rd. 8).  We got together 6 years ago to organize our first studio tour, and haven’t looked back!  In addition to running a highly successful studio each year, in 2011 we had a group exhibition at the Huntsville Art Society’s The Art Space gallery, and now have an even bigger exhibit in the foyer of Huntsville’s sports hub, the Canada Summit Centre.

Everyone’s invited to a reception with the artists Friday January 27 from 5 to 6:30 pm.

I'm very pleased to be part of the Craft Currents exhibition on right now at the Canada Summit Centre in Huntsville.  It's a travelling exhibition of fine craft from Northern Ontario, and will be on display until mid-January 2012.  Here's my piece that is in the show.  It's titled "Autumn Falls", a fused glass panel where I "painted" a landscape in the vibrant hues of autumn.  Of course I "painted" with glass.
This panel, framed in stained pine, will be available for sale if  it is not sold during the exhibition.
